Basic Information

  • Botanical Name: Mangifera indica

Description

  • Tree Height: Large tree ranging from 30–40 feet up to 100–120 feet

  • Leaves: 4–12 inches long and 1–3 inches wide; spear-shaped, rectangular with an acute sharp tip

  • Flowers: Small, greenish-yellow flowers arranged in long racemes; emit Maadak-sugandha (mild intoxicating fragrance)

  • Fruits: Vary in shape and size

    • Unripe: Green in colour

    • Ripe: Yellow to reddish in colour

  • Fruit Pulp: Yellow-orange coloured; sweet or sweet-sour with pleasant fragrance

  • Seeds: Present in the center of the fruit


Phenology

  • Flowering Time: Spring

  • Fruiting Time: Summer to Monsoon


Varieties

  • Many varieties are found; however, in practice, Kamli and Biju are considered the two main types

  • Bark, leaves, flowers, and fruit pulp are Kapha–Pitta shamaka

  • Bark, leaves, flowers, and fruit pulp act as Raktarodhana (promote blood clotting)

  • Fruit Pulp: Istambhana

  • Ripe Fruit: Kapha–Pitta shamaka

  • Unripe Fruit: Tridosha karaka

  • Unripe fruit used in Anshughaata

  • Ripe fruit used in Vibandha (constipation), Hridroga, Varnavikara, and Shukra-daurbalya
